Choice Health Bar is a still quite a hidden gem and makes you feel quite the local. It certainly become popular with travelers to Maui with all the accolades they have won. There is no better place to satisfy your hunger with local organic, plant-based superfoods. Acai Bowls (The OG) with flax seed granola, bananas, papaya, bee pollen, and the refreshing Macadamia Nut milk cold coffee (The Game Changer) are a must. The place has a cool, modern hippie vibe, the staff is great and with 3 locations in Maui, it easily accessible. Make it your daily anytime healthy meal stop! Also,they have started to open for dinner too for a few hours. So, its a nice alternative to the usual island fare.

Little known fact: Interestingly both the founders, Emily and Kathryn have no background in running a restaurant and are Boston and UVA graduates. The downfall of banking in 2008, triggered them to take a vacation in Maui and voila!  - Rest is history.

Made famous by Gorden Ramsey, Huli Huli Chicken is a must stop, not just because they were on TV. This is simple a great location. Right on a quiet beach in a simple, local family owned roadside eatery, A perfect spot to rest on as you start your return trip from Hana. Trust me after a long day of driving and hikes, you will enjoy this very special local favorite.

Tip: Get there by 2PM as they stay start to close and run out their favorite chicken dish

The sign post rightly says “ the bread you have been driving for”. About 1 hour into your drive from Paia on Hana Highway, make a stop at the beautiful ocean side bakery outpost. The smell and taste of fresh banana loaf with coffee is heavenly. Find a spot to sit around the farm area or walk few steps to the black sand rocky beach and enjoy the bread+coffee under the palm trees!

Tip: They have other goodies too like smoothies but sure take 1 or 2 loaves for your home or hotel!

COMBINE WITH YOUR HALEAKALA SUNRISE @ SUMMIT TRIP

Get your morning Coffee and Pastry fix at SIP ME Cafe in Makawao! As you make your way down after enjoying the surreal Haleakala Sunrise, make sure to turn to the town of Makawao and grab amazing coffee and pastries at SIP ME coffee - a hidden gem at the footsteps of Haleakala.

Tip: Must order delicious almond croissant with your coffee
Little known fact: The founder is Laura from MT, who dreamt about owning a coffee shop since she was 17!

Just the sight of this ice-cream truck makes you want to stop! But its a ‘vegan” ice-cream truck which makes it unique. As advertised, it’s made with love and coconuts. Plan to stop here on you return trip unless you started late :) or only doing a few stops on the Road to Hana, as they open from 11 AM to 5PM.

Tip: It’s cash only. So carry enough cash on this road trip as cell coverage is poor or none at all.

COMBINE WITH YOUR SNORKELING TRIP TO HONOLUA BAY (KAPALUA AREA)

Yes, another banana bread stop! Of course its Maui! But this one is on the opposite side of Hana. For those on West Maui and exploring Kapalua Bay area .

If you are headed for snorkeling in Honolua Bay mid-morning, you are going to be hungry for lunch soon after. But before that, drive up past Honolua Bay on the West Side of Maui and make a roadside stop at the famous Julia’s Banana Bread. Hits the spot! Remember to get there before 2 PM as they close then and run out of bread! (they typically get 150 loaves for the day!)

Tip: If you have time, add a great photo stop at the Heart Shaped Rock. A Short 5 minute drive from Julia’s.
